新頭殼newtalk2013.10.29 劉奕霆/綜合報導

Are Your Kids Average? National StudyOn Kids And Digital Media

The new research study,  “Zero to Eight: Children’s Media Use inAmerica 2013,” is the second in a series of national surveys by Common Sense Media(thefirst was conducted in 2011).

Common Sense Media surveyed arepresentative cross-section of 1463 parents of children ages 8 and under. “Byreplicating the methods used two years ago,” the study reads, “we are able todocument how children’s media environments and behaviors have changed.”

Common Sense Media is an independent nonprofit organization that advocatesfor children. They are “dedicated to improving the lives of kids and familiesby providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice theyneed to thrive in a world of media and technology.”

I’m particularly fond of their KidsMedia App, which lives on my smartphone’s home screen. The app givesparents all the information they need to decide whether or not media (books, apps, movies, games, TV, etc.) is appropriate for their children.

The “Zero to Eight” study aims to understand what role digital media playsin the lives of young kids. “The only way to maximize the positive impact ofmedia on children is to have an accurate understanding of the role it plays intheir lives.”

Here, I offer a few of the study’s key findings (quoted directly).

·        Among families with children age 8 and under, there has been a five-foldincrease in ownership of tablet devices such as iPads, from 8% of all familiesin 2011 to 40% in 2013. The percent of children with access to some type of“smart” mobile device at home (e.g. smartphone, tablet) has jumped from half(52%) to three-quarters (75%) of all children in just two years.
·        Seventy-two percent of children age 8 and under have used a mobile devicefor some type of media activity such as playing games, watching videos, orusing apps, up from 38% in 2011. In fact, today, 38% of children under 2 haveused a mobile device for media (compared to 10% two years ago). The percent ofchildren who use mobile devices on a daily basis–at least once a day ormore–has more than doubled, from 8% to 17%.
·        Access to high-speed Internet among lower-income families has essentiallystalled over the past two years (it was 42% in 2011 and is 46% today, anon-significant difference), and the gap between rich and poor endures (86% ofhigh-income families have high-speed access).
·        Access to smart phones has gone from 27% to 51% among lower-incomefamilies over the past two years, while tablet ownership has gone from 2% to20% among the same group. Two years ago, 22% of lower-income children had everused a mobile device; today 65% have done so.
·        Although 20% of lower-income children now have a tablet device at home,63% of higher-income children do; and while 35% of lower-income parents havedownloaded education apps for their child, 75% of higher-income parents havedone so.
·        For the first time, “traditional” screen time (TV, DVDs, computers, and videogames) hasfallen by more than a half-hour a day, as mobile screen time has increased 10minutes a day. (That said, TV still dominates 50% of screen time, which comesin at around 1:55 hours per day).
